SSC Stenographer 2026 Overview
SSC Stenographer is a specialized recruitment examination conducted by the Staff Selection Commission to select Stenographers Grade 'C' (Group 'B' Non-Gazetted) and Stenographers Grade 'D' (Group 'C' Non-Gazetted) for appointment across Central Ministries, Departments, Attached Offices, and Tribunals across India.
SSC Stenographer 2026 has declared approximately 2,006 vacancies across central government organizations including the Central Secretariat Stenographers Service (CSSS), Armed Forces Headquarters (AFHQ), CBDT, and CBIC. The examination format does not include a Mathematics section, consisting solely of a Computer-Based Test (200 marks in 2 hours: 50 marks Reasoning, 50 marks General Awareness, and 100 marks English Language) followed by a mandatory Shorthand Skill Test.
Selected Grade 'C' stenographers join at Pay Level 6 (₹35,400 basic) while Grade 'D' stenographers start at Pay Level 4 (₹25,500 basic). In-hand salaries range from ₹35,000 to ₹58,000 per month, with career advancement leading to Personal Assistant (PA) and Private Secretary (PS) ranks.
