§1. Official CBT Dates Announced for October 2026
The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) have officially scheduled the nationwide Computer Based Test (CBT) under Centralized Employment Notice (CEN) 02/2026 for Technician Grade I (Signal) and Technician Grade III from 6 October to 9 October 2026.
With over 9,000 sanctioned vacancies across Indian Railways zones, this examination is conducted as a single-stage screening CBT, followed directly by Document Verification (DV) and Medical Examination.
§2. Grade I Signal vs Grade III: Cadre & Eligibility Comparison
- 1Technician Grade I (Signal):
- •Central Pay Level: Level 5 (₹29,200 – ₹92,300).
- •Minimum Qualification: Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Physics / Electronics / Computer Science / IT / Instrumentation, OR 3-Year Engineering Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in these streams.
- •Core Responsibilities: Maintenance and testing of electronic interlocking systems, axle counters, automatic block signaling, and train collision avoidance systems (Kavach).
- 1Technician Grade III (Various Trades):
- •Central Pay Level: Level 2 (₹19,900 – ₹63,200).
- •Minimum Qualification: Matriculation / SSLC plus NCVT/SCVT recognized ITI in relevant trade, OR Class 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics (for Technician Grade III Telecommunication/S&T).
- •Core Responsibilities: Overhauling rolling stock, mechanical bogie maintenance, electrical traction wiring, carriage and wagon maintenance.
§3. Topic-Wise Marks Blueprint & Examination Pattern
The examination comprises 100 questions for 100 marks with a total time allowance of 90 minutes:
Technician Grade I (Signal) Syllabus Blueprint:
- •Basic Science & Engineering: 35 Questions (35 Marks) — The decisive section.
- •Basics of Computers and Applications: 20 Questions (20 Marks).
- •Mathematics: 20 Questions (20 Marks).
- •General Intelligence & Reasoning: 15 Questions (15 Marks).
- •General Awareness: 10 Questions (10 Marks).
Technician Grade III Syllabus Blueprint:
- •General Science: 40 Questions (40 Marks) — High school standard Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
- •Mathematics: 25 Questions (25 Marks).
- •General Intelligence & Reasoning: 25 Questions (25 Marks).
- •General Awareness: 10 Questions (10 Marks).
§4. Mastering Basic Science & Engineering: High-Yield Units
For Technician Grade I candidates, the Basic Science and Engineering module carries 35% of the entire paper weightage. Focus your preparation on these core topics:
- 1Electricity & Magnetism: Ohm's Law, Kirchhoff's Laws, resistance combinations, electromagnetic induction, Faraday's laws, AC circuits, and capacitive reactance.
- 2Electronics & Measurements: Semiconductor physics, diodes, transistors (BJT & MOSFET), operational amplifiers, logic gates, and CRO basics.
- 3Heat & Thermodynamics: Heat transfer mechanisms, thermal expansion, specific heat capacity, and thermodynamic cycles.
- 4Basics of Computers (20 Marks): Computer architecture, memory hierarchy, operating systems, networking fundamentals (OSI model, TCP/IP, IP addressing), and MS Office shortcut keys.
§5. Negative Marking Traps & Zonal Cut-Off Forecasts by Mohit Verma
In Railway recruitment tests, the 1/3rd (0.33) negative penalty is the primary reason for failure. Guessing 6 questions incorrectly wipes out the score earned by two correct answers.
Expected CBT Safe Score Benchmarks (Raw Score out of 100):
- •RRB Allahabad / Prayagraj, Chandigarh, Ajmer: Grade I Signal safe raw score: 72–76 | Grade III safe raw score: 68–73.
- •RRB Mumbai, Kolkata, Secunderabad: Grade I Signal safe raw score: 68–72 | Grade III safe raw score: 64–69.
- •RRB Malda, Siliguri, Muzaffarpur, Guwahati: Grade I Signal safe raw score: 62–67 | Grade III safe raw score: 58–63.
Focus on accuracy over raw attempt volume. In normalized railway scoring, higher candidate accuracy is strongly rewarded by the equipercentile algorithm.
