§1. The Premier Administrative Cadre of Uttar Pradesh
The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) conducts the Combined State / Upper Subordinate Services Examination (popularly known as UPPSC PCS) to recruit Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDM), Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSP), Block Development Officers (BDO), and Assistant Regional Transport Officers (ARTO).
With registration concluded and lakhs of civil service aspirants preparing for the preliminary screening, mastering subject weightage and avoiding the CSAT elimination trap is essential.
§2. GS Paper 1: Subject-Wise Question Distribution & Trend Analysis
Paper 1 consists of 150 objective questions worth 200 marks (each question carries 1.33 marks, with 0.44 marks deducted per wrong answer).
Historical Question Distribution:
- •Current Affairs (National & International): 30 to 35 Questions. High emphasis on awards, international summits, sports, bilateral military exercises, and government welfare portals.
- •Indian History & National Movement: 22 to 26 Questions. Modern Indian History (1857–1947) and revolutionary movements dominate, alongside Gupta and Mauryan administration.
- •Indian Polity & Governance: 20 to 24 Questions. High return section! Revisit Articles 12–51A (Fundamental Rights, DPSP, Fundamental Duties), Panchayati Raj amendments (73rd & 74th), and statutory commissions.
- •Geography & Environment: 30 to 35 Questions. Indian river drainage systems, mountain passes, wildlife sanctuaries, biosphere reserves, climate change treaties, and COP decisions.
- •General Science & Technology: 18 to 22 Questions. Applied biology (human diseases, vitamins, nutrition), environmental chemistry, and space/defence technology.
- •UP Special GK: 15 to 20 Questions. Dedicated state-level factual coverage.
§3. UP Special GK: High-Yield Themes & Current Initiatives
Since the removal of optional subjects from UPPSC Mains and the introduction of GS Papers 5 & 6 on Uttar Pradesh, the Commission has significantly increased UP-specific questions in Prelims:
- 1One District One Product (ODOP): Match the product with the district (e.g., Brassware – Moradabad, Perfumes – Kannauj, Glassware – Firozabad, Chikankari – Lucknow, Black Pottery – Nizamabad/Azamgarh).
- 2Infrastructure Corridors: Purvanchal Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway, Ganga Expressway, and Defence Industrial Corridors (Aligarh, Agra, Jhansi, Chitrakoot, Kanpur, Lucknow).
- 3UP Demography & Census: Child sex ratio, literacy ranking across districts (highest Gautam Buddha Nagar, lowest Shravasti), and population density patterns.
- 4Historical Heritage & Folk Culture: Classical Kathak gharanas, folk music (Birha, Kajri, Rasiya, Chaiti), and major Buddhist pilgrimage circuits (Sarnath, Kushinagar, Shravasti, Kaushambi).
§4. The CSAT 33% Qualifying Trap & How to Avoid It
Every year, hundreds of sincere aspirants scoring 120+ in GS Paper 1 are disqualified because they score below 66 marks (33%) in Paper 2 (CSAT - 100 Questions / 200 Marks).
The Composition of Paper 2:
- •General Hindi: 20 Questions (Sandhi, Samas, Tatsam-Tadbhav, Idioms, Sentence error correction). Scoring 16+ here is very achievable for Hindi-speaking candidates.
- •General English: 15 Questions (Reading comprehension passage, Active/Passive voice, Prepositions, Vocab).
- •Interpersonal Skills & Communication: 30 to 35 Questions. The most ambiguous section; answer from a balanced administrative standpoint avoiding extremes.
- •General Mental Ability & Basic Numeracy (Class 10th level): 30 to 35 Questions. Puzzles, coding-decoding, percentages, simple ratios.
Winning Strategy: Target 50 to 55 high-confidence questions primarily from Hindi, Basic Math, and Reasoning. Never guess blindly on Interpersonal Skills to prevent negative deductions from pulling you below the 66-mark threshold.
§5. Net Score Calculation & Risk Management under 1/3rd Negative Marking
In UPPSC Prelims, attempting too few questions is as dangerous as blind guessing:
- •Safe Attempt Volume: Candidates should aim for 125 to 135 attempted questions in GS Paper 1.
- •Net Target: With an anticipated accuracy rate of 80–85%, attempting 130 questions yielding 105 correct and 25 incorrect generates a net score of ~128 marks, placing you safely above the General qualifying cutoff across any shift.
