§1. The Landmark India Post GDS 2026 Cycle
On 8 September 2026, the Department of Posts under the Ministry of Communications launched its major pan-India recruitment drive for 23,757 Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) posts. Spanning all 23 Postal Circles (including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and West Bengal), this recruitment provides a premier central government entry route for candidates holding a secondary school (Class 10th) qualification.
Unlike conventional competitive exams requiring multi-tier CBT screenings, the GDS selection protocol is purely merit-driven, calculated entirely on candidate Class 10th board percentages.
§2. Cadre Roles, Working Hours & TRCA Salary Structure
The recruitment encompasses two primary designations operating under Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA):
- 1Branch Postmaster (BPM):
- •Pay Scale: TRCA Slab-1 (Minimum ₹12,000 to Maximum ₹29,380 per month).
- •Core Duties: Overall administrative head of the Branch Post Office (BO), handling India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) operations, postal life insurance (PLI/RPLI), cash management, and maintaining official records.
- •Prescribed Working Hours: 4 to 5 hours daily.
- 1Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) / Dak Sevak:
- •Pay Scale: TRCA Slab-1 (Minimum ₹10,000 to Maximum ₹24,470 per month).
- •Core Duties: Doorstep delivery of mail, parcels, money orders, handling counter duties, assisting the BPM in deposit mobilization, and coordinating with Railway Mail Service (RMS) transit points.
- •Prescribed Working Hours: 4 hours daily.
§3. Eligibility & Class 10th Marks Calculation Formula
- •Basic Education: Secondary School Examination pass certificate of 10th standard with passing marks in Mathematics and English (having been studied as compulsory or elective subjects) conducted by any recognized Board of School Education.
- •Compulsory Local Language: Candidate must have studied the official local language of the applied postal circle at least up to the 10th standard.
- •Computer Knowledge: Must possess a basic computer training certificate of at least 60 days duration from a recognized computer training institute (waived if computer was a subject in Class 10th or 12th).
- •Grade Point (CGPA) Conversion: For boards evaluating candidates in grades (such as CBSE), the percentage conversion multiplier of 9.5 is applied uniformly by the automated system algorithm.
§4. Anticipated Circle-Wise Merit Cut-off Trends
Due to high aggregate scores across state and central education boards, qualifying cut-offs typically mirror these brackets across the initial merit lists:
- •Uttar Pradesh & Bihar Circles: General / EWS: 95.8%–98.2% | OBC: 94.6%–97.0% | SC/ST: 89.4%–93.2%.
- •Rajasthan & Haryana Circles: General: 96.4%–99.0% | OBC: 95.0%–97.8% | SC/ST: 91.0%–94.5%.
- •Southern & North-Eastern Circles (Karnataka, Kerala, Assam): General: 88.5%–94.0% | Reserved: 82.0%–88.5%.
Important Insight: If your score is between 85% and 92%, do not lose hope after Merit List 1. India Post typically releases up to 5 to 7 subsequent merit lists to fill vacancies left vacant due to candidate document non-verification.
§5. Document Verification (DV) Protocols & Traps to Avoid
- 1Identity & Age Verification: Ensure the name spelling on your Class 10th marksheet matches your Aadhaar Card and Community/Caste Certificate letter-for-letter.
- 2Domicile & Caste Validity: Central Government format OBC-NCL and EWS certificates must be current for the 2026-27 financial year.
- 3Medical Fitness: Candidates must obtain a Medical Certificate from a Government Medical Officer / Civil Surgeon prior to formal engagement.
